The O’Briens of Park House Hotel, Bepton
The story of Park House Hotel is deeply entwined with the O’Brien family, whose stewardship transformed a quiet country house into a well-loved hotel with a rich legacy. The journey began in the mid-20th century when Michael O’Brien, settled in Bepton after years in India, where he had been a keen polo player.
Following World War II, the O’Briens moved into Park House, a large country home that had been lent to the government during the war and left vacant afterward. Recognising its potential, Ioné and Michael O’Brien opened it as a hotel in the late 1940s. Their warm hospitality and strong ties to the Cowdray Estate—home of British polo—quickly made Park House a favourite among international polo players, especially during the summer season.
The hotel thrived under their care. Ioné’s vibrant personality and flair for entertaining created a welcoming, “home-from-home” atmosphere that became the hallmark of the House. Michael’s connections and charm brought in a steady stream of distinguished guests, and the hotel gained a reputation for its discreet design and personal touch.
Their son, also named Michael O’Brien, continued the family tradition, overseeing the hotel’s gradual transformation. By the 1970s, modern amenities such as additional bathrooms were installed, and the hotel began making its mark as a ‘must visit’ for tourists and locals alike.
Michael Sr remained a beloved figure in Bepton until his passing shortly after his 100th birthday in 1971. His legacy lived on through his family’s continued dedication to making the hotel a standout destination.
Today, Park House Hotel is overseen by Seamus O’Brien, grandson of the original proprietors. Under his leadership, it has evolved into an idyllic rural retreat with a spa and leisure facilities including golf and championship-standard grass tennis courts, while preserving the warmth and charm that defined his grandparents tenure.
The family’s legacy endures in every detail, from the welcoming atmosphere to the continuing connection with the local community and polo heritage.
