Head of Grounds, Jon Day, gives us an insight into his To Do List during the winter months…
Renowned for its 10 glorious acres, Park House, Hotel & Spa takes a lot of careful upkeep and preparation all year round in order to keep the grounds looking stunning for our guests. The Grounds Team take great pride in keeping the manicured gardens and outdoor sporting facilities up to the high standard expected from us. Even in the dormant winter months, there is plenty to be done to keep the annual planting and maintenance schedule on track.
At this time of year, his team are tackling projects such as the extension of patio areas, tree surgery, general maintenance, car park repair, installation of an irrigation system for the croquet lawn and extending drainage for the sports turf. The wood from regular tree surgery is chipped for local use as eco logs for burners, as well as for bark chippings and mulch.
In the winter months the grounds machinery including tractors, Toro ride-on mowers and ancillary equipment is also overhauled, serviced and repaired.
Careful planning of the planting schedule in close consultation with the family owners is crucial to perfectly reflect their personal taste, as well as the quintessential English feel of the hotel. This synergy can be seen in the abundant flora within the grounds when the gardens are in full bloom. The team is also fastidious in preparing and maintaining the immaculate championship level sports turf surfaces in readiness for the summer season which commences in May.
Finally like any department, there is plenty of paperwork to do including proposals, risk assessments and budgets to prepare.
The exquisite grounds at Park House are testament to the hard work of the team throughout the year. “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” (Alexander Graham Bell)
